About IPL - Intense Pulsed Light

Want IPL in Surrey or South London? Come to Light Fantastic!

What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a visible light source which is attracted to the melanin found in hair. The light is absorbed into the hair follicle causing a heat reaction which will destroy the hair. The IPL machine produces narrow beams of light which can be aimed at the visible blood vessels in the skin. The heat from the lasers damages the dilated veins and causes them to shrink so they are no longer visible and this happens with minimal scarring or damage to the surrounding area.

The Ellipse has pre-programmed treatment suggestions for different hair and skin types. Light Fantastic staff are fully trained and qualified at the highest level.

How does IPL differ from other hair removal treatments?

As most women know with waxing, hair needs to be grown before treatment which isn't always convenient. With IPL the area to be treated must be shaved (not waxed or plucked) prior to treatment, as the hair needs to be short for a more successful result.

There are also the endless trips to the salon for waxing whereas with IPL the results are permanent, so although the IPL costs more initially it will save you much more in the long term. Shaving and depilatory creams as a form of hair removal can lead to uncomfortable rashes, stubble and ingrown hairs. With IPL, hair that does grow back is much finer after each treatment; there are no rashes and IPL will put a stop to those ugly ingrown hairs.

Then there is electrolysis - a painful and slow time consuming process as the needle has to be inserted into each hair follicle one at a time. It is usually charged by the amount of time taken, which, if it is a larger area costs will be high and can take years to get results. IPL treats large areas at one time with usually only 6 to 8 treatments needed (sometimes more), depending on the area being treated.

Why does it take more than one treatment?

It is important for our clients to understand why all the hairs are not treated in one session. This is because there are 3 stages of hair growth:

  • Anagen - growing stage
  • Catagen - transition stage
  • Telogen - resting stage

Hair can be in any of these stages at any one time, but only the hair in the Anagen (growth) stage will be successfully treated at each session. The number of hairs in Anagen phase at any one time varies from 10-70% depending on the body site; this is why we recommend 6-8 treatments with 6-8 week intervals for maximum results.
